Cialis contains the active ingredient tadalafil and is an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). It can take effect in as little as 30 minutes and can last for up to 36 hours. 6 out of 10 men* report harder erections when taking tadalafil, although it will only work if you are sexually aroused.

What is erectile dysfunction (ED)?

ED is classed as an inability to get and/or maintain an erection long enough to have successful intercourse.

In order to maintain an erection throughout intercourse, it is vital that the penis receives a healthy blood supply, that the nervous system is healthy and you are sexually aroused. If one of these elements is missing, you may experience ED, but the causes are often complex and different from person to person.

How Cialis works

Tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, is part of a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Tadalafil works by increasing blood flow to the penis. With an increased blood supply, the penis can stay erect for longer and the erection is firmer, provided you are sexually aroused.

Cialis is the branded version of Tadalafil and they work in the same way. It’s always worth bearing in mind that while Cialis can treat ED, it doesn’t treat any underlying causes of ED - no matter if they are physical or psychological. Cialis doesn't work to increase your sexual desire, it is only triggered into action when you are sexually excited.

Cialis frequently asked questions

  • Are there any side effects to taking Cialis?

Experiencing side effects of Cialis is uncommon, but can sometimes occur. These side effects can include headaches, indigestion, a racing heartbeat, lightheadedness, blurred vision and a blocked nose. Any side effects from taking Cialis should not last more than a few hours.

  • What dosage of Cialis should I take?

The majority of people will be prescribed Cialis 10mg, however your weight and height could mean you are prescribed a higher dosage - Cialis 20mg.

The cause and severity of your ED may also impact the dosage a clinician prescribes. It is worth noting that the strength of the dosage will not affect how quickly the treatment works, or how long it lasts.

  • How can I take Cialis for the best results?

Unlike Viagra or Levitra, food does not impact the effectiveness of Cialis, so it does not need to be taken on an empty stomach. For best results, avoid heavy drinking when taking Cialis. While having one beer or a glass of wine is most likely fine, alcohol can impact the effectiveness of the treatment, and you may find that Cialis doesn’t work if you have drunk more than 2 units of alcohol.

  • Why isn’t Cialis working?

There are a variety of reasons why Cialis may not be working. If Cialis has not worked ask yourself these questions:

    • Have I waited long enough after taking it before attempting to have sex?
    • Have I waited too long and the effect has worn off?
    • Am I sexually aroused enough to kick start the effect?

We advise that you try any ED treatment at least 8 times before you consider switching to an alternative or question your clinician about the dose.
