Information on ED
At some point in their lives, most men will fail to keep an erection, or get an erection in the first place.** This is particularly common in those over 40, however it can be a cause of distress and if it keeps happening you should speak with a healthcare professional.
There are a variety of treatments available to treat ED, including various medications, creams and vacuum pumps. Generally these treatments help ED but only when you are sexually aroused. They will not treat the cause of ED or increase your sexual desire.
How Sildenafil treats ED
Sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in both Sildenafil and Viagra, works to treat ED by increasing blood supply to the penis when you are sexually aroused. It belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
Sildenafil tablets usually start to work within 30 to 60 minutes after taking, but you have to be sexually aroused to trigger the effect. The effect of the medication can last anything between 1 and 4 hours, but your erection should go away after having sex.
Following recent changes to the regulation around sildenafil citrate tablets, Viagra or its generic counterpart Sildenafil, you can now access the treatment with a prescription or by completing a questionnaire with a pharmacist.
If you are worried you might have ED, you should speak to a healthcare professional. Sildenafil frequently asked questions
Should I be taking Sildenafil 25mg, Sildenafil 50mg or Sildenafil 100mg?
The standard dosage of Sildenafil is 50mg, however there are factors that can influence the dosage you’re prescribed. Your height, weight and age may mean you’re prescribed a higher or lower dosage of Sildenafil. The severity and underlying cause of your ED can also have an impact, but it is important to remember, a stronger dose doesn’t necessarily mean you will feel the effect quicker or for a longer time.
Higher doses of Sildenafil carry with them a higher chance of experiencing side effects.
Can I take Sildenafil if I am on other medication?
As with all medication, it is important to let your clinician know if you’re taking any regular medication. While on the most part, Sildenafil is fine to take alongside other medicines, there are certain medications which will make you unsuitable for the treatment.
If you’re taking nicorandil or nitrates, such as a GTN spray or isosorbide mononitrate tablets to treat angina, you will not be able to take Sildenafil.
You must wait 6 hours before taking Sildenafil if you are on alpha-blockers (such as doxazosin or tamsulosin).
Are there any side effects when taking Sildenafil
Sildenafil side effects are uncommon, however they can include headaches, nausea, hot flushes, indigestion, blurred vision and dizziness.
In very rare cases people experience severe side effects such as chest pains, prolonged and painful erections, serious skin reactions, sudden decrease in vision and seizures. If you experience any of these you should call a doctor straight away.
