Male STI tests
If you’re a man who has sex with women you can use this test to determine if you currently have chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV. The test kit will arrive with everything you need to take the test including instructions and packaging to send it back to our partner laboratory.
While no test is 100% accurate, these tests, when taken at the right time, should correctly identify if you have one of the 4 STIs being tested for. It’s advised that all sexually active people should take an STI test each year, or whenever you change partners.
Taking the male STI test
The male STI test involves taking 2 samples - one of urine and one a finger prick of blood. The urine sample is tested for chlamydia and gonorrhoea, the blood sample is tested for HIV and syphilis. You’ll be provided with clear instructions on how to collect both these samples. It’s important to note that once you’ve collected your urine sample it will need to go back to the lab within 4 days to get an accurate result.
You’ll collect your blood sample using a small finger prick device, known as a lancet. This will only need to be a small sample and shouldn’t hurt.
How the male STI test service works at Online Doctor
Once you’ve selected the STI test kit you think you need, you will have to complete a short questionnaire. This will be reviewed by one of our clinicians and if suitable will be approved and sent out to your chosen address. You’ll then need to complete the test, using the instructions provided, and send it back to the lab using the packaging and free postage that came with it. Once the lab receives your samples you’ll get your results within 3 working days. Your results will be available online and kept secure in your Patient Record.Request a male STI test kit
Male STI tests frequently asked questions
I have sex with men, not women, where can I get tested?
This test is not for men who have sex with men (MSM). If you’re a man who has sex with men you can request the man to man STI test from Online Doctor. The service works in exactly the same way but will be better tailored to you.
Can I take this test if I have symptoms?
As mentioned above, these tests are not for anyone who’s experiencing symptoms. If you’re experiencing symptoms you should go to your local sexual health clinic or get an appointment with your GP. If you have symptoms and think you might have been exposed to HIV please seek urgent medical advice.
What will happen when I get my results?
All negative results will be uploaded into your Patient Record and you’ll be notified when your results are available and you can view them securely online.
Those people who test positive for chlamydia will be offered a course of antibiotics for free. These will be prescribed only when clinically appropriate.
You will be advised to go to your sexual health clinic for treatment if your test is positive for gonorrhoea or syphilis. They will be able to give you the best guidance on managing the infection and looking after yourself in the future.
The HIV test may come back ‘reactive’, meaning you might have HIV. If this is the case one of our clinicians will ring you to discuss this. If they can’t get hold of you they will try to organise a telephone appointment as soon as possible. Following this you will be directed to a sexual health clinic to get advice on how to manage the condition.
