STIQ Day is taking place on the 14th January this year. It's to encourage people to think about their sexual health and to get regular sexual health checks.

The 14th January has been chosen specially as many sexually transmitted infections take 2 weeks to be detectable. If you have had unprotected sex during the festive period, you should plan to get tested after this date.

Getting a test is quick, easy and simple to do.

How soon after unprotected sex can I get an STI test?

Some infections do not show up immediately after sex so you may need to wait to get an accurate test result. The NHS advises to wait for 2 weeks for chlamydia and gonorrhoea and 4 weeks for syphilis and HIV. If you have symptoms call your local sexual health clinic as you may be offered a test sooner.

Can I get an STI test at my doctors?

You can get tested at a variety of different locations, sexual health clinics and some GP surgeries.

Can I get an STI test on my period?

All tests and treatments can be carried out no matter where you are in your menstrual cycle. You can get tested on your period.

How long do STI tests and results take?

Tests may involve taking a urine sample, using a swab or taking a finger prick blood test. If visiting a clinic, for some tests you can get the results and treatment on the same day. For others you may have to wait a week or 2. If your results are positive you may be asked to go back to the clinic to discuss the treatment you need.

If you've opted for a LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor home test, your kit will contain full instructions on how to use it and send it off to the laboratory. You'll usually receive your results within 3 working days of the lab receiving you samples. You'll get a notification by email and/or text to let you know your results are ready to view in your Patient Record.

How do you test for chlamydia?

Getting tested for chlamydia can be done by a urine sample or swab test. You do not always need a physical examination by a healthcare professional.

You can do an at-home chlamydia test which you can buy online, or we also offer a range of over the counter chlamydia test kits which you can do at home.  The test can take less than 5 minutes using a swab, placing the swab into the test tube provided. You will have clear visual result within minutes.
