  • How does VIRALEZE™ nasal spray work?

Your nasal cavity is the primary site where SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) and other respiratory virus infection becomes established, before spreading to the lungs.** VIRALEZE™contains the active ingredient astodrimer sodium (SPL7013) which is antiviral and has been shown in laboratory studies to inactivate viruses. Astodrimer sodium acts by blocking the interaction between the SARS-CoV-2 viral “spikes” and the human cells the virus is seeking to infect.

“Spike” proteins on the surface of these (SARS-CoV-2) viruses that meet VIRALEZE™ are trapped by astodrimer sodium. This interaction is “virucidal”, meaning that the virus is irreversibly blocked and can no longer infect cells. This provides a physical barrier to respiratory viruses. In the nasal cavity, “blocked” viruses would be cleared naturally through the nasal mucus.

  • What is the active ingredient?

The active ingredient in VIRALEZE™ is astodrimer sodium (also known as SPL7013), an antiviral compound that has been shown to inactivate a broad spectrum of respiratory viruses, including >99.9% of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 in laboratory studies.

VIRALEZE™ antiviral nasal spray creates a moisturising and protective barrier containing astodrimer sodium on the inside surface of your nose that stops viruses from being able to infect your nasal mucosal cells. The blocked viruses are naturally removed in the nasal mucus.

Astodrimer sodium is an active ingredient in other products approved in >40 countries, which are available for sale in UK, Europe, Japan, South East Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.

  • Does nasal spray have side effects?

The active ingredient in VIRALEZE™, astodrimer sodium, is a large molecule that acts locally at site of application and does not enter the bloodstream. Astodrimer sodium has been marketed for more than 7 years in other products. If you experience nasal irritation, a nosebleed, or nasal congestion, stop using the product and speak to a healthcare professional.

  • How many times a day can I use it?

You can use one spray in each nostril up to 4 times a day. If you blow your nose after spraying VIRALEZE™, you will need to reapply.

  • Can I use the nasal spray with a face mask?

Yes, you can wear a face mask following application of VIRALEZE™. Please always follow your local health and medical advice to ensure the best possible protection against respiratory viruses, which include vaccination, personal protective equipment (PPE) and good hygiene practices, along with social distancing.

  • Can I use VIRALEZE™ with a hay fever or allergy nasal spray?

If you do need to use an allergy nasal spray and also wish to use VIRALEZE™, you should use the allergy nasal spray first, then wait 2-4 hours before using VIRALEZE™.

  • Will using VIRALEZE™ affect my COVID-19 test results?

No VIRALEZE™ doesn’t interfere with the results from a PCR or antibody COVID-19 test. A PCR COVID-19 test will still detect a COVID-19 infection even if you’ve been using VIRALEZE™. There should be no interference with a COVID-19 antibody blood test as VIRALEZE™ isn’t absorbed into your blood.

  • Can I use the nasal spray if I have had a COVID-19 vaccine?

Yes, this antiviral nasal spray can be used if you've had a COVID-19 vaccine. The active ingredient, astodrimer sodium, is not known to interfere with other medications because it isn't absorbed into the bloodstream.
