How the Medicated Weight Loss Service works

You’ll start by talking to our pharmacist, they’ll make sure you’re eligible for the service.* If you’re suitable, you’ll pay for your medication. 

Our pharmacist will explain
how to use the medication and how to manage any side effects. You’ll also be given a time to come back in to store to collect your first month of medication.

Every week during the first month you’ll get a phone call from the pharmacy to check how you’re doing. For the whole time you’re using our service our team is there to support your weight loss journey.

Every month you’ll have a face-to-face consultation with our pharmacist who’ll also give you your next months’ worth of treatment.

What is the Medicated Weight Loss Service?

The Medicated Weight Loss Service can help you achieve a sustained and healthy weight loss, with ongoing advice and support alongside a prescription medication treatment. This medication works to decrease your appetite and therefore reduce your food intake, which used in conjunction with a calorie-controlled diet and increased exercise has been shown to aid weight loss.

Is the Medicated Weight Loss Service suitable for me?

We want to help you stay well, from managing your prescriptions to supporting you in healthy lifestyle choices. One of the ways we can all be proactive in managing our health, is to eat well, get enough exercise and maintain a healthy weight. This is because an unhealthy lifestyle can lead to a number of health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease.

You’re eligible for the Medicated Weight Loss Service if:

  • You are aged 18 to 75
  • You have a BMI of over 30
  • Or a BMI of over 27 but have been diagnosed with a condition that is made worse by weight gain such as a heart condition

How much does the service cost?

Your consultation is free. During the consultation, our pharmacist will assess your needs and determine whether the service is right for you. If you're eligible your first month will cost £149, which includes your medication, needles and sharps bin. It’s then £239 a month after that. To make sure you’re on track, you’ll have a progress evaluation with your pharmacist after 12 weeks.

    Do I need to book an appointment?

    An appointment is not necessary, however if there’s a time or date that you’d find more convenient we suggest you visit or call your local pharmacy to book an appointment. You can easily find you nearest store using our store locator.

    Do I need to prepare for my appointment?

    No, if you are eligible for the Medicated Weight Loss Service, your pharmacist will show how exactly what you need to do at home, including how to use the weight loss medication as part of your appointment. They’ll be able to answer any questions you have, as well as advise you fully on what to do next.

    What happens after my first appointment?

    You will receive weekly telephone calls from the pharmacy team, who will support you through the first few weeks of taking the medication. You will need to book an appointment with the pharmacist every month to discuss your progress and collect new supplies of medication.

    How long will the service take?

    Your first appointment for the Medicated Weight Loss Service can take up to 20 minutes. Our pharmacists are always happy to answer your questions, so this time may change depending on your queries.

    What do I get as part of the Weight Loss Service?

    As part of your first consultation you will receive:

    • One months’ worth of medication
    • A welcome pack including healthy lifestyle support tips and tools to keep you motivated
    • Accessories needed to administer the service such as needles and sharps bin 

    You’ll also get a Weight Loss Service pack which includes:

    • Advice on setting and sticking to your weight loss goals
    • Healthy eating and exercise top tips
    • Long term weight management support
    • Other resources to help you reach your goal
    • Our healthcare services we have available 

    How long do I need to use the Weight Loss Service?

    At 12 weeks you’ll have a progress evaluation with your pharmacist. If after three months of treatment, you haven’t lost 5% of your body weight, then our pharmacist will advise you stop the treatment and suggest alternatives to manage your weight.

    Who can’t use the Medicated Weight Loss Service?

    There are certain people that can’t use our Weight Loss Service due to the active ingredient used in the medication.

    You’re not eligible for the Medicated Weight Loss Service if:

    • You are under 18 years of age
    • You are over 75 years of age
    • You are hypersensitive to liraglutide (3mg) or any of the other ingredients of the medicine
    • You are pregnant, think that you might be pregnant or planning to have a baby
    • You are breastfeeding
    • You are currently on treatment with GLP1-RA e.g. Victoza
    • You have an initial BMI of 27-30 and don’t have a weight-related health condition
    • You have an initial BMI of less than 27 unless you already use the medication or wish to transfer your treatment 

    If you have any of the following medical conditions, you’re not eligible for this service:

    • Hepatic impairment (liver)
    • Renal impairment (kidney)
    • Congestive heart failure
    • Obesity secondary to endocrinological
    • An eating disorder
    • Inflammatory bowel disease
    • Diabetic gastroparesis
    • A history of pancreatitis
    • Thyroid disease 

    How does the weight loss medication work?

    The weight loss medication used in the Medicated Weight Loss Service helps to increase the feeling of fullness, decreases hunger and therefore reducing food intake. Patients taking the medication reported feeling more satisfied after eating and eating less than before they were prescribed the medication.

    Do you need a prescription for the medication?

    The medication is available from our pharmacists who can make a decision to supply the medication as part of the Medicated Weight Loss Service to those who are eligible. 

    What medication is used in the Medicated Weight Loss Service?**

    During the Medicated Weight Loss Service consultation, a pharmacist will assess if the service and medication is right for you. If you both agree, then the pharmacist will prescribe a once daily injection that is approved for weight management alongside diet and exercise.

    Are there any side effects associated with the prescribed weight loss medication?

    All medications may cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. During your appointment your pharmacist will be able to answer any questions you may have and explain possible side effects to you, we also recommend reading the patient information carefully.

    The most common side effects of the medication are nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, and vomiting. These side effects usually go away after a few days or weeks.

    Are there any drug interactions with the weight loss medication?

    During the consultation with our pharmacist they will check for any potential drug interactions such as diabetes or medication to thin your blood and if this is the case you will be provided with an alternative plan.

    What other weight loss options are available?

    If the Medicated Weight Loss Service isn’t quite right for you there are plenty of other ways you can maintain a healthy weight. Alongside exercise and a balanced diet, we have a range of weight loss products that you can buy over the counter both in your local pharmacy and online.
