Product description

Quick and easy to use Strep A home test

If you have a sore throat, it's possible that you have an infection caused by Group A Streptococcus (GAS) bacteria. To treat this with antibiotics, it's important to identify the infection first. The Strep A home test kit is a quick and reliable way to test for the presence of Group A Streptococcus bacteria, also known as Strep A. This self-test only requires a throat swab and takes just 10 minutes to provide accurate results.

How does the Strep A self test work?

This self test uses a throat swab to collect a sample from the back of the throat. The sample is then tested for the presence of Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria, which can cause strep throat.

How accurate is the Strep A self test?

This test is accurate when performed correctly (please follow the instructions carefully). However, it's possible to get a false negative result with any test. If you're still experiencing symptoms of Strep A infection, please consult your doctor or call 111.

Features of Strep A rapid self test

  • Detects Strep A antigen, an indicator of a Strep A infection which can lead to conditions including: Pharyngitis, tonsillitis, impetigo and scarlet fever
  • No requirement to limit food or fluid intake prior to testing
  • Home testing - no need to send off for results
  • Requires only a throat swab
  • Test can be carried out at any time

If you would like more information about the causes, symptoms, and treatments of Strep A, read our Strep A advice article.

  • How to use

    1. Add 4 drops of buffer A and 4 drops of buffer B respectively into the extraction tube and fully mix. The colour of mixed liquid should become yellow.
    2. Place the specimen extraction swab into the tube. Swirl the swab for ten times. Leave the swab in the tube for one minute. Then remove the swab while squeezing the swab head against the inside of the extraction tube as you remove it to expunge as much liquid as possible from the swab. Discard the swab.
    3. Cap the tube and mix contents by gently swirling. The extraction specimen must be tested immediately.
    4. Remove the test cassette from its sealed pouch by tearing at the notch and place it on a clean, dry, level surface. Add 3 drops of mixed liquid specimen from the extraction tube to the sample well (with an arrow mark) of the test cassette by inverting and squeezing the tube as show.
    5. Wait for 10 minutes and read the results. Do not read results after 15 mins.
