At LloydsPharmacy we want to help you stay well, from managing your prescriptions to supporting you in healthy lifestyle choices. One of the ways we can all be proactive in managing our health, is to eat well, get enough exercise and maintain a healthy weight. This is because an unhealthy lifestyle can lead to a number of health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease.

How the Medicated Weight Loss Service works

You will start with a discussion with our pharmacist to check if you are suitable for the service.

If you are suitable, you will be given a time to come back in to collect your first month of injections, where our pharmacist will explain how to use the injection and how to manage any side effects.

During the first month you will receive exclusive in-app coaching and a weekly phone call from the pharmacy to support you through the dose escalation period and check how you are doing.

Every month you will have a face-to-face consultation with our pharmacist and will be given your next months’ worth of treatment.

Is the Medicated Weight Loss Service suitable for me?

You’re eligible for the Medicated Weight Loss Service if:

  • You are aged 18 to 75
  • You have a BMI of over 30
  • Or a BMI of over 27 but have been diagnosed with a condition that is made worse by weight gain such as a heart condition

If you don't meet the requirement for our Medicated Weight Loss Service, don't worry, we have a wide range of slimming aids and meal replacements to help you.

How much does the service cost?

The monthly cost of the service is £260, this includes the cost of all your injections for that month. After 12 weeks of treatment you’ll have a progress evaluation with your pharmacist.

During the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic we are working hard to ensure that our pharmacists can provide services, care and advice to you safely. Here are some of the things we are doing to keep you safe.

  • Where can I get the Weight Loss Service?

    Our Medicated Weight Loss Service is available at all our pharmacies. Use our store locator to find your closest store today.

  • Do I need to book an appointment?

    An appointment is not necessary, however if there’s a time or date that you’d find more convenient we suggest you visit or call your local pharmacy to book an appointment. You can easily find you nearest store using our store locator.

  • Do I need to prepare for my appointment?

    No, your pharmacist will show you exactly what you need to do at home, including how to use the weight loss injection as part of your appointment. They’ll be able to answer any questions you have, as well as advise you fully on what to do next.

  • What happens after my first appointment?

    You will receive exclusive in-app health coaching and weekly telephone calls from the pharmacy team, who will support you through the first few weeks of taking the medication. You will need to book an appointment with the pharmacist every month to discuss your progress and collect new supplies of medication.

  • How long will the service take?

    Your first appointment for the Medicated Weight Loss Service can take up to 20 minutes. Our pharmacists are always happy to answer your questions, so this time may change depending on your queries.

  • What do I get as part of the Weight Loss Service?

    As part of your first consultation you will receive:

    • One months’ worth of medication
    • A welcome pack including healthy lifestyle support tips and tools to keep you motivated
    • Access to exclusive coaching throughout your weight loss journey with LloydsPharmacy with the Liva Healthcare app
    • Accessories needed to administer the service such as needles and sharps bin 

    You’ll also get a Weight Loss Service pack which includes:

    • Advice on setting and sticking to your weight loss goals
    • Healthy eating and exercise top tips
    • Long term weight management support
    • Other resources to help you reach your goal
    • Our healthcare services we have available 
  • How long do I need to use the Weight Loss Service?

    At 12 weeks you’ll have a progress evaluation with your pharmacist. If after three months of treatment, you haven’t lost 5% of your body weight, then our pharmacist will advise you stop the treatment and suggest alternatives to manage your weight.

  • Who can’t use the Medicated Weight Loss Service?

    There are certain people that can’t use our Weight Loss Service due to the medication used in Saxenda®.

    You’re not eligible for the Medicated Weight Loss Service if:

    • You are under 18 years of age
    • You are over 75 years of age
    • You are hypersensitive to liraglutide (3mg) or any of the other ingredients of the medicine
    • You are pregnant, think that you might be pregnant or planning to have a baby
    • You are breastfeeding
    • You are currently on treatment with GLP1-RA e.g. Victoza
    • You have an initial BMI of 27-30 and don’t have a weight-related health condition
    • You have an initial BMI of less than 27 unless you already use Saxenda or wish to transfer your treatment 

    If you have any of the following medical conditions, you’re not eligible for this service:

    • Hepatic impairment (liver)
    • Renal impairment (kidney)
    • Congestive heart failure
    • Obesity secondary to endocrinological
    • An eating disorder
    • Inflammatory bowel disease
    • Diabetic gastroparesis
    • A history of pancreatitis
    • Thyroid disease 
  • How do weight loss injections work?

    The weight loss injection used in the Medicated Weight Loss Service helps to increase the feeling of fullness, decreases hunger and therefore reducing food intake. Patients taking Saxenda® reported feeling more satisfied after eating and eating less than before they were prescribed the medication.

  • Do you need a prescription for slimming injections?

    The injection, Saxenda®, is available from our pharmacists who can make a decision to supply the medication as part of the Medicated Weight Loss Service to those who are eligible. 

  • What is the prescription medication used in the injection?***

    Saxenda® is the prescribed medication used in the Medicated Weight Loss Service. It is a once-daily injection approved for weight management alongside diet and exercise.

  • Are there any side effects associated with the prescribed weight loss injection?

    Like with all medications, Saxenda® may cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. During your appointment your pharmacist will be able to answer any questions you may have and explain possible side effects to you, we also recommend reading the patient information carefully.

    The most common side effects of Saxenda® are nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, and vomiting. These side effects usually go away after a few days or weeks.

  • Are there any drug interactions with weight loss injections?

    Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before using Saxenda® if you take medication for diabetes or to thin your blood.

  • What other weight loss options are available?

    If the Medicated Weight Loss Service isn’t quite right for you there are plenty of other ways you can maintain a healthy weight. Alongside exercise and a balanced diet, we have a range of weight loss products that you can buy over the counter both in your local pharmacy and online. Simply ask your pharmacist for recommendations if you’re in store or browse our weight loss range online which includes meal replacements, diet pills and supplements, shakes and more.

    You can also use our Online Doctor service for weight loss treatments, one of our clinical team can check your suitability for weight loss pills to make sure they’re the right option for you.

  • What is exclusive coaching with the Liva Healthcare app and how do I get access?

    To help support you in your weight loss, we’re working with Liva Healthcare to bring you a free personal health coach in your pocket. If you download the app you get:

    • On-going coaching to help you with diet, exercise and lifestyle advice
    • A personalised programme with advice, to support you in your weight loss
    • A way to track your progress including up to 15 important vitals such as your weight, steps, mood, sleep, diet and activity levels
    • Support from a community of peers on the same journey as you

    LIVA Healthcare can help you with:

    • Tracking food with a photo log
    • Tracking medication
    • Tracking your daily and weekly progress
    • Put you in touch with a community
    • Send you helpful reminders

    To access the exclusive coaching you need to: 

    Sign up and choose the personal health coach which best suits you. Then you will have an initial conversation with your personal coach, which will be a 30-60 minute one on one session to help you set goals. Your coach can help you through video messages and building a personalised plan. All coaches on the app are specially trained nurses, dietitians or health coaches.
