How common is hair loss among women?

About 25% of women experience hair loss. The most common condition is female-pattern hair loss which is caused by a combination of genetics, hormone levels, and ageing.

What are the causes of hair loss in women?

The most common type of hair loss in women is female pattern hair loss, but there are other types that can be caused by extreme stress, pregnancy and certain medications. Some conditions and diseases can also result in hair loss.

When can women begin to experience hair loss?

Hair loss is most common in women in their 30s and 40s, but some women can experience hair loss in their 20s. Hair loss often peaks around the menopause.

How can I tell if I have hair loss?

Female pattern hair loss can be identified by a wider parting, more hair with the root attached on your brush, on your pillow, or in the shower drain, and you find it more difficult to style your hair.

Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you are unsure about whether you are experiencing any of these signs.

How do I know if I’m actually experiencing hair loss?

Hair loss begins gradually and you may only begin to notice it after a few years. Female pattern balding results in general hair loss, mainly on the top of the head along the parting.

Is my hair just damaged?

Damaged hair is dry, has split ends, breaks easily and feels more delicate. With extra care, damaged hair can be restored and grown out. With hereditary hair loss, both the hair and root bulb falls out of the scalp.

Can lifestyle changes affect my hair?

Temporary female hair loss can be a result of dietary changes, pregnancy, extreme stress, certain medications, and some medical conditions. Female pattern hair loss is not caused by colouring or highlighting your hair. The sun will not increase hair loss, but you should still protect your scalp from the sun with a hat or sunscreen.
