Vitamin E is a staple in many cosmetics, from moisturisers, to masks and toners. But, do you know why this vitamin is so popular in skincare?

Find out all you need to know about vitamin E and your skin, including how it helps your skin, supplements and products that you can add to your skincare routine.

How can vitamin E help your skin?

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble, essential nutrient with anti-inflammatory properties. It helps your body strengthen its natural defence against illness and infection and helps maintain healthy skin and eyes.

It may also be beneficial in helping to reduce any UV damage to the skin.

Other vitamins to help your skin

Vitamin E isn’t the only vitamin that helps keep your skin looking and feeling it’s best. Vitamins D, C, K and B are all important in keeping your skin healthy. The best way to get the vitamins you need is to eat a wide range of healthy foods, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats and lean protein sources.

Sources of vitamin E in your diet

Men need 4mg of vitamin E a day and women need 3mg. For most of this, you should get enough vitamin E from your diet.

Vitamin E is found in:

  • Plant oils: such as soya, corn and olive oil
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Wheatgerm: found in cereals and cereal products

It can be absorbed even better when combined with vitamin C.

Should I take a vitamin E supplement?

You should be able to get all the vitamin E from eating a varied and balanced diet. But if you’re concerned the Department of Health and Social Care suggests that taking 540mg or less a day of vitamin E supplements is unlikely to cause any harm.

You could try:

  • Nutri Within multivitamins and minerals - this multivitamin comes with a years supply and is the simplest and easiest way to get all your daily vitamins and minerals in one easy to swallow tablet.

It contains vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin C and a whole host of other vitamins and minerals to help support your body. Always read the label and ask your pharmacist for advice.

Vitamin E in skincare

Vitamin E is available in many skincare products including sun creams, moisturisers and masks. It's easily absorbed into the skin.

Applying vitamin E as part of these products directly to your skin may increase the amount of it stored within the sebaceous glands. These are tiny glands found near the surface of your skin.
