How can an NHS Health Check help me?

An NHS Health Check helps to measure your risk of developing certain health problems and can help spot any early signs of conditions such as; stroke, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and kidney disease. Our healthcare professionals can offer advice to help you to prevent these conditions developing in the future.

What to expect and how to book an appointment

If you’re between 40 and 74 and live in the UK, you may be eligible for a free health check with the NHS. The free service is a way of checking your wellbeing, as well as assessing you for risks for certain health problems. At LloydsPharmacy, we help take care of you by providing this as an in-store service, which can be booked in selected stores.

What happens in an NHS Health Check?

The health check should take no more than 30 minutes. A healthcare professional, or in store Pharmacist, will ask you a series of simple questions about your lifestyle and family history. The check is nothing to worry about and you won’t be asked any embarrassing questions or need to remove clothing.

You can also expect:

  • A blood pressure test
  • Your weight and height measured
  • A finger prick blood test for your blood sugar and cholesterol levels

What does the NHS Health Check look out for?

The free NHS Health Check focusses on your risk of:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Strokes
  • Kidney disease
  • If you are over 65, you will also be told the signs of dementia to look out for

What will my results tell me?

After your NHS Health Check, the LloydsPharmacy healthcare professional will be happy to offer lifestyle advice or suggest you visit your GP, if needed. They might offer ideas on how to:

  • Improve your diet
  • Increase your levels or frequency of physical activity
  • How to stop smoking or lose weight

How can I arrange an NHS Health Check?

To find out more or book an NHS Health Check, find your local UK store and service availability here.

During the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic we are working hard to ensure that our pharmacies are able to provide services, care and advice to you as safely as possible. When you visit us for a service, things might be a little different.

We are trying to ensure we manage social distancing in stores, so we may ask you to wait just a minute or two before you enter the pharmacy. When providing services, our pharmacy team will be wearing PPE. The PPE they wear will depend on the service being carried out, but colleagues will always be wearing a face mask. If you book a service that requires the consultation room, don’t worry, it will be cleaned before and after each service appointment - you may be asked for your consent to leave the door open to aid air flow but if you need extra privacy we don’t mind shutting the door. Lastly, when attending the pharmacy, please bring a face covering with you to use during the consultation.
